A new week.... a new outlook!

Today: 6km
Week: 6km
Month: 312km
Year: 620km

Some one gave me some great advice which I am going to share because I think it is a great way to look at things. Now maby evry one else already has this view but I did not and when I heard it, I liked it. This person said to me "The race IS the reward. It is the reward for all our hard work and so do yourself a favour and make sure you enjoy it!". Now that sounds simple but quite different to how I view things. I have often commented that I seem to get better results in my training than in my races and that is because I get quite stressed about the race and the result. Now the complete opposite way to look at it is... "well I have done the hard slog, now I DESERVE this run". Haha what a simple thought process.... just proves I can be a bit slow on the uptake. The other thought I had was what kind of a person rewards themself with a 42km run- hmmmm :-)

Now onto my run.... nothing exciting to report, except it was sooooo much cooler and really enjoyable to run this evening. I enjoyed my blissful sleep in and headed out on my 6km loop from home. It was really nice this morning to get up after 7am, my mum had stayed the night and we had breakfast together and a chat- I love when she is well!! I thought I would run at 5:30min pace.... first km was dead on 5:30 pace but then the next km was 5:05 pace.... which felt really comfortable so I decided to just maintian my form and see how it progressed. I pretty much sat on 5:05 pace for the rest of the run except the last km was 4:30min. I think the cooler whether really made a difference because I felt really good and just enjoyed being outside. So tonight was 6km in 30:30- averaged 5:05min/km.

Abso-bloody-lutely Kit! When we toe that start line the work will all be behind us - the race is purely for selfish purposes!

I am sure you will enjoy the day as much as you seem to be enjoying your training - probably even more.

Whenever I find the going tough I visualise myself crossing the finish line and imagine how happy I will be - it always brings a smile to my face.

Mr WT is doing his very first marathon in Canberra. I can cheer very loudly too and will be there cheering like a wildthing until every cool runner crosses the finish line.

I am very excited. Canberra marathon is my 2007 goal.

Sounds like a very good piece of advise; I might even listen to that myself!

Good run Katie!

I approached the Sydney marathon with that attitude and had a great race. My main goal was to enjoy myself and if I did a good time, well that was the icing on the cake.
So I try and run every race like that now - okay occasionally I have a rush of blood to the brain and suffer for it, but I'm getting better at relaxing and just enjoying the run.

So good attitude to have Katie - and you'll find you will run so much better for it! Keep up the good work!

Wise words Katie. I like what you posted in that CR thread today for the first time fun runner.

I've used that type of philosophy with some big goals too Kit. It's a positive way of reinforcing the end goal, and stops you from getting jaded or un-focussed during the lead-up.

Very positive thinking KIT.

Great run too. I love it when you have a plan but feel so much better and achieve more than what you expected to.

Getting closer now....

What a great February you have had, your total distance is going to put you on the line and ready at Canberra!

That's a nice way to look at things. I always see races as a test - I like tests - to see how successful my training has been. Isn't it amazing how people can have such different outlooks. I think I will ponder this a bit more and blog about it in the future.
