CR 5km challenge.

Today: 12km
Week: 57km
Month: 306km
Year: 956km

It was the CR 5km challenge this morning and I was undecided about what I wanted to do. I was swinging between having an easy run or putting in some effort. I was still undecided when the first groups headed out so thought I would start with the 23min group and back off if I wanted to. I felt pretty good in my 2km warm up, but unsure if my legs felt tired from last nights effort. There was a good little group for 23mins...including our wonderful team J 6ft hero 2P! We started and I decided I would just take it out hard and try to hang on. The forst km felt too fast but my legs and breathing felt ok. At about the 2.5km mark I remembered last month it felt tougher... but today I was feeling really good. My breathing was fine and I felt like I was running with good form. I just kep telling myself to relax.... ray says it feels easier if you relax. I started to fade in the last km and the final 500m felt tough. The fasties didn't catch me until about 600m to go so that spurred me on a bit. So I finished in 22:35 which is a 38sec pb! I was sooo happy with my time and even better it felt realxed and not too uncomfortable. The other great thing was the 5km run back felt ok as well.... seemed to still have a bit left. We finished up having breakfast at Bowen Island and there was a big group of us... lots of excited running chatter~ a great start to the day :-) Bec and Bernie G ran really well this morning obviously recovering well from 6ft!! Now the big question for me is whether I should run the 10km striders next saturday. I have had various advice and feel undecided. I would really like to have a good hit out on fresher legs but am also wanting to be cautious about injury. Touch wood I am injury free and am feleing really good at the moment.... what do others think? Ray (Eagle) said it would be a good opportunity to have a good hit out and get a current 10km time and that would give me a better indication of my pace for marathon day.... food for thought. I will run this by Sean... he will probably say no~ he has me down to do a 4km cross country race. Now I will have to get ray to update my PB box.... or maby wait til next week ;-)

Splits:
4:27, 4:26, 4:31, 4:18, 4:52

Way to go Kitty. If that doesn't boost your confidence about running a faster than 4:00hr Canmberra nothing will!

Huuuge congrats once again Katie! A 38 second PB is incredible. That 22:35 certainly calculates out to a very healthy marathon time.

Everything is coming together perfectly :-)

Excellent run Kate. You do seem to run faster in the taper. Lighter k's in the legs and all that stuff. Looks good for Canberra.

Woohoo! That's a great new PB Katie!

I think you should see what Sean says about doing the 10km. There's plenty of other 10km races to do and it would be a shame to risk all your training on one race.. just remember Belinda.

That first k split was faster than that Kit - you nearly killed me :-)

Ask Belinda what she thinks about a 10k race before a marathon!!! I wouldn't do it - something short and fast for sure but not 10k full stick.

Congratulations on such a fantastic PB Kit and thanks for dragging me out - my time wouldn't have been anywhere near as good if I hadn't been mesmerised by your perfect form ;-)

I'm thinking low 3.40's for you KitKat - Even better if you have a fantastic day.

Congrats on your PB. You must be feeling pretty confident for the Canberra marathon. It sounds like everything is going really well.

Well done Kit.
Next Saturday, don't go the 10km,
go the half 21.1 km !
One week, 4 PBs: 5, 10, 21.1, 42.2!
;-)
And if you get injured, then don't come running to me for sympathy.

You were right, go and see Sean.

Well done on your massive PB! *claps* You are running well. I know what you mean about running stroner. I've noticed that in my last few speed sessions that my av pace has dropped but I'm still feeling comfortable. Fingers crossed we'll get to the start line in one piece and raring to go! 15 sleeps to go!

The taper for a marathon is a great time to pick up some nice PBs at shorter distances, but if next week is only one week out from Canberra I would say it is 50/50 about whether it is too close to be running an all-out 10k. Today would have been ideal for the 10k, next week for 5k, but hey, that's just theory. I agree that ultimately you should follow your coach's advice.

Everything is on track for Canberra! I'd lean towards not trying for the 10km PB. Even just based upon the Domain course, the first lap will be conjested and it has a few twists and turns.

I for one will not be running, too much at risk, especially for a first time marathon after a great build up. Certainly be interested in Sean's opinion.
